Bronze, which is an alloy of copper, tin and zinc, would make the bookends rarer and more valuable. I determined these are bronze-plated.

Instead of using bronze, companies often made bronze-plated bookends. Plaster of paris or a metal base was poured into a mold and later a layer of bronze was applied. It is hard to tell the difference from a photograph. Since the bronze layer is thin, chipping can occur or even a corner will get knocked off and then identification is easy.
